COMMUNITY PROGRAM
WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY PROGRAM?
The Community Program increases public awareness of child abuse and neglect through training and workshops on issues related to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Prevention workshops or training are offered to any organization that requests them. Topics are tailored to the requesting group and can range from very specific to more general information. For example, neighborhoods and churches have requested help dealing with abuse incidents in their communities. Schools frequently request workshops or seminars on how to work with traumatized children or compassion stress/fatigue. Childcare centers usually request information about the indicators of child abuse and when and how to report suspected maltreatment. University and college students request more general information about statistics, types of abuse, reporting and supporting children who have been abused. Approximately one thousand adults participated in Pebble Project in the community program in 1999. The Pebble Project also participates in health and information fairs.
WHAT ARE OUR GOALS?
I To provide the public with more information about:
� the effects of child abuse and neglect on children and our community
� how to recognize indicators of child maltreatment
� how to support a child during disclosure
� how to make a child abuse/neglect report to the Austin Police Department and the Department of Protective and Regulatory Services. Includes barriers to reporting such as fear of making things worse.
� how to work with traumatized children in a school setting
� how working with traumatized children can lead to compassion stress/fatigue
II. To coordinate our efforts with other child abuse prevention agencies in the community.
