VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We believe that it is the responsibility of the entire community to help children stay physically and emotionally safe so that they can achieve their potential. As a Pebble Project volunteer, you would be involved in that effort in a vital way.

Some volunteers participate in the following ways:

Child Assault Prevention Project (C.A.P.P.) Volunteer

Two CAPP volunteers and a staff member conduct workshops in elementary school classrooms that empower children to stay "Safe, Strong and Free". Volunteers participate in scripted role-plays showing effective ways to deal with bullying, "stranger danger" and inappropriate touches. After the workshop, presenters talk with individual children to clarify information, problem-solve personal issues or begin the process for getting help for an abuse situation. Volunteers must be available on weekday mornings at least twice a month and need to have reliable transportation.

Training for this program includes approximately 16 hours of information about child abuse; assault prevention; our policies and procedures; how to handle a disclosure of abuse; and practice of the role-plays volunteers do in the classroom workshop. Training is regularly held at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters but is occasionally scheduled for other times.

It is a Pebble Project policy that any volunteer who will be working with children and who has a history of abuse must have completed some form of therapy specifically related to the abuse. Victimization should not have taken place within the past year. Any concerns you might have in this area can be discussed confidentially.

Videos In Prevention (V.I.P.) Volunteer

Presenters visit individual classrooms to show a film and lead discussion that can increase students' ability to identify, resist and seek help for abuse situations. Private conversations, requested by students after a presentation, may lead to a report of abuse or referral to the counselor. Volunteers work primarily in middle schools, with a focus on sixth grade. Presentations are intensively scheduled at the beginning of the school year and sporadically thereafter. They are scheduled throughout the school day at the convenience of the school.

Volunteers who are successful in this position usually have had public speaking experience and/or knowledge of abuse dynamics. Training includes 8 hours of general information and on-the-job training for the classroom presentations. Volunteers who have experienced abuse need to have had therapy related to their victimization, and the abuse should not have occurred in the past year.

Special Projects Volunteers

We occasionally need volunteers who would like to help with a variety of tasks in our office. We have a current need for volunteers who have skills for writing and producing a quarterly newsletter. We also need group co-facilitators who have training or experience in leading a therapeutic group.  Please discuss your interest and availability for these positions with the volunteer coordinator.
