SmartKids
SmartKids creates a safe environment for elementary, middle, and high school students to learn and have fun after school. SmartKids meets weekdays in six different neighborhoods around Austin. All students live in public housing managed by the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA). HACA provides SmartKids space in their community centers so their young residents can continue to learn close to home.
SmartKids provides homework help and academic support to students at risk of failing and/or dropping out of school. Students who have homework receive individualized attention from a caring adult on daily basis. Every day, SmartKids offers each student a hot meal prepared and delivered by Meals On Wheels. SmartKids also enriches a student's learning experience by working on special projects, hosting guest speakers, and going on field trips.
SmartKids is an informal, safe environment kids have come to depend on in their neighborhood. We need volunteers during after school hours, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in several locations:
