Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) Partnership
Jennifer's story (con't)
"I was first introduced to Communities In Schools (CIS) when I was young. Me and my identical twin sister were easily distracted and loved to create disruptions, especially at school. We often found ourselves outside of the principal's office awaiting detentions or even suspensions from school. My sister went to CIS and told me how much fun she had playing games and going to groups. One day she made me go too and I haven't been the same since. I found out a lot about myself. I still struggled but CIS was there every step of the way, especially from middle school to high school. In the end, the even cheered for me as I walked across the stage at graduation.
Now in college, I still see many CIS faces in my neighborhood. I live in public housing and some of my favorite moments happen when I open my door and see them talking with other students like me on the basketball court. For now, I look on from a distance letting someone else have a turn and quietly plan for my family's future.
I attribute my overall success to the following people; Mrs. Northcutt-Benson, Coach Guzman, Mrs. Davis, Ms. Roberts, Ms. Hudson, Ms. Townsend, Mr. Jarmon, Mrs. Perales, Mrs. Acton, Miss Beth, Miss Kelly, Miss Carrie, Pastor and Mrs. Solis, Ms. Trial, Ruby Salazaar, Lisa Murillo Miss CeCe, Ms. Picasio and Dave Turpin and my mother."
Often children who live in public housing face a constellation of risk factors that can impede their success in school. The Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) recognizes these risk factors exist and seeks to support their residents in succeeding in school and in life. It is this dedication to community development that led HACA to partner with Communities In Schools.
HACA understands the positive difference in-school case management can make to a student who is struggling. With HACA's support, CIS is able to hire caseworkers to work directly in the schools with HACA residents. These caseworkers provide HACA students with the full range of CIS case management services and often serve as key links in connecting HACA communities and local schools. In addition, our after-school program, SmartKids provides a safe place for HACA residents to do their homework, connect with a caring adult, and eat a nutritious meal. These kid-friendly meals are delivered daily by Meals On Wheels and More. In providing children with a place in their community where their hearts and bodies are safe and nourished, we are able to help their hearts, bodies, and minds grow.
CIS and the HACA embarked on their partnership in 2000 with a special project at Fulmore Middle School and an after-school program at the Booker T. Washington public housing community. In the past five years our partnership has grown to include providing services for youth who live in HACA housing at ten schools and multiple public housing sites.

- Booker T. Washington Apartments
- Bouldin Oaks
