Blueprint Schools
In April 2002, the Austin Independent School District (AISD) adopted a "Blueprint to Leave No Child Behind" to raise achievement in six targeted schools with a history of chronic failure. This plan included a multi-faceted approach to address the academic needs of the students; however, the community was challenged to help meet the social service needs in these six schools.
In response, and with the support of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Communities In Schools (CIS) has placed a team of social workers full time on all six campuses to address the social service needs of the children and families in these "Blueprint" schools. On each of these campuses, CIS staff members are working closely with the school administrators and campus faculty to identify the specific social service needs that frequently become a barrier to a child's learning and are planning and implementing services accordingly.
Using a case management model, CIS programming on each campus includes counseling services, crisis intervention, parental involvement activities, academic assistance, community engagement initiatives, mentoring and other activities designed to productively engage students while addressing essential needs on the campus and in the community.
