History

The XY-Zone began as the vision of a community coalition, formed to address the issue of teen pregnancy and promote male involvement in prevention efforts. The XY-Zone officially launched in 1999 with funding from the Texas Department of Health. Because of our strong track record in the public schools, Communities In Schools was chosen as the primary service provider, working directly with the young men in the project, with Lifeworks acting as the managing agency.

In 2004, after five years at Johnston High School, Communities In Schools sought out new funding partners to continue the project and expand it. Our sites now include: Johnston, Reagan, LBJ, Crockett, Lanier and Georgetown High Schools and Mendez Middle School. In the 2005-06 school year, our staff of eight full-time caseworkers are providing intensive case management services to 320 young men. Since the project's inception, hundreds of young men have participated with many graduating, going off to college and crediting the XY-Zone with helping them succeed.
